Things I Love….

The day started out hectic, with a lost jersey, found moments before leaving for two basketball games. No time for me to eat anything, save oatmeal cookies grabbed on the way out the door. Little Cal’s breakfast was Rice Krispie Treats….at least it’s cereal, right? An icy rain was beginning to fall. I got wet trying to clear a space to sit on the passenger side of the van. We were running late, again, and I had let the gas gauge go to “Empty”.

What would this day bring? I’ve been trying to be the woman that “looks well to the ways of her household”. I told my husband I didn’t feel very victorious today. However, the Lord put it on my heart to look for the joy in this day. He has blessed me so richly. My attitude should reflect that.

The games were fun. When we got home, giant snowflakes were beginning to fall. I have NEVER seen flakes so big. They were like half dollars! It ended up being the biggest snow we’ve since since we moved to Georgia 10 years ago. We all stood outside in the swirling snow, marveling. A beautiful goldfinch flew to the deck to get some seed. It’s the first one we’ve seen this year, and it was so bold to come so close! I love birds.

I loved watching the boys play in the snow. I loved seeing my husband throwing snowballs at them from the deck. I love the way he chased me around the house with his freezing cold hands, finally catching me up in his arms to steal my warmth while I shrieked like a little girl.

I loved watching our oldest son teach our youngest boy how to make snow angels and ride on the sled (which, by the way, only gets used about once every 5 years! I love it that someone actually USED the sled!) I loved to see four brothers dwell in unity, struggling together so manfully to build a snowman.

I loved having hot chocolate with buttered white toast. The toast soaks up the chocolate and it is our favorite treat on a cold day! While we were drinking hot chocolate I put the wet coats in the dryer. I love it that Colin’s pockets were full of peanuts and candy corn, which spilled out all over the dryer! He hasn’t needed his warm coat since our trip to Illinois in November. It was funny to think of him stowing harvest treasures from grandma’s house in his pockets.

I love it that I got to put on my pajamas at 2 o’clock and take a winter’s nap, albeit one that was interrupted several times. I love it that Little Cal woke up early and crawled into bed with me, sucking his thumb and fingering his blankie and falling back to sleep. He turns 3 on Tuesday…how many more times will he crawl in to snuggle with me? He is getting big so fast. I studied his face, trying to remember every detail.

I love that I had a few moments while they were playing outside to read something interesting. While my hands were busy fixing dinner, my brain had ample food to chew on. I love looking out the window and seeing our first Georgia snowman. I loved our cozy dinner of apple sausage, rosemary and white bean soup with crusty bread and apples.

Cal grabbed my hand at dinner and said, “I love you mommy!” so spontaneously. I smiled at him and he jumped down from his chair and ran over to hug me. When I said, “Thank you for that, Little C!” he smiled his winsome little grin and said, “I’m welcome!” I love that.

I love that it is Saturday night, and the Sabbath has started. I love that there are homemade brownies in the kitchen, waiting to be eaten. I love that there is a roaring fire on the hearth. I love that all around me my men are enjoying each other’s company. I love this quiet moment in which to write. I love the promise of this evening’s fellowship with my family. I love the Father Who gave me this day.

“All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.”
Psalm 139: 16-18
