Favorite Christmas Hymns

I don’t collect much, preferring not to add to the clutter in my house. But I do collect one thing: Illustrated Christmas hymn books.

Every night during the Christmas season we gather as a family for worship. One of the highlights of this time is singing worshipful Christmas music together. Every night a different child gets to choose the song for the night. Along the way, they memorize several songs and each child chooses special favorites.

Here are some of the ones I like best!

The Friendly Beasts, illustrated by Tomie de Paolo

What Can I Bring Him, illustrated by Debi Gliori, is one of my favorite Christmas hymns. I know it by the title In the Bleak Midwinter.

We Three Kings
by Olga Zharkova is another all-time favorite. Her illustrations are collages, which appear to be made out of watercolors and torn bits of tissue paper. Absolutely beautiful, and one of my favorites, this version has ALL the verses.

We also like A Treasury of Christmas Songs, illustrated with works from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

And Christmas Carols for a Kids Heart, which comes with a CD.

My preschooler needs a jump start on learning some of these songs before the Christmas season begins!  This year we are using Kids Sing Christmas CD set to help her learn some of the songs.

Our Christmas coloring pages come from Color the Christmas Classics.
